Dr. Gabba: Kongo - Tagebuch.

Notebook bound in full cloth (16 cm x 20.5), 140 pages handwritten. A lot of of sketches in pen and several loose sheets of various kinds. Among the drawings, 43 of these depict human tatoos and tribal scarification. Diary, written in French, which testifies the presence in Congo between March 12, 1926 and March 1928 of this Italian doctor hose surname is Gabba. From his arrival at Boma, the stay of this doctor, in Congo for study commissioned by the Government of Belgium, is characterized by continuous movements, many by water river, with the intention of visiting the medical centers of this colony. The greater interest of the italian doctor seems to be the study of sleeping sickness, in particular through biological analysis and the use of microscope. In the various considerations written in the diary, it would seem that the approach of the other doctors he meets is more empirical, based on palpation and small surgery operations. In Bandundu he meets Dr. Wolf, who was in Congo since 1915. The italian doctor remains with him for three nights. In this stay he can see that the most frequent diseases are malaria, sleeping sickness, bronchitis, pneumonia and ulcers of various kinds. He metts a lot of italian doctors such as Avanzini, Dr. Mazzocchi, Dr. Polledro who established a farm in which cassava is cultivated. A constant difficulty which Gabba describes in various movements, seems to be the finding of porters. In one occasion, he tells that one of this tried to escap so Gabba was forced to use weapons. He visits many cities: Brousse, Kianga on the shore of Kivilu, Lusambo, where he meets the people Wibongo, Iba, Longonia, Bosango, Kikwit, Badundu. In Djna he meets doctor Dennaret. With him he discusses the methodologies for medical examination of the populations. In the diary there are also many descriptions of customs and rituals of the people he meets, as also testified by the many drawings that depict tatoos and tribal scarification, which are designed with particular care. In Lusambo he observes the rituals celebrated for the death of an elderly lady, but also propitiatory dances, fertility and war dances. The entire diary is written in French, few parts in Italian and some opinions which probably the author finds compromising are written in Italian but using greek alphabet characters such as events relating to the massacres of indigenous and cruelty episodes perpetrated by soldiers in the colony.

He visits many cities: Boma, Bandundu, Brousse, Kianga on the shore of Kivilu, Lusambo, where he meets the people Wibongo, Iba, Longonia, Bosango, Kikwit, Badundu. In Djna he meets doctor Dennaret.

Das Tagebuch gibt einen schönen Einblick in die v.a. medizinische Infrastruktur, aber gibt auch Beschreibungen über die Dörfer, die EInheimischen und die belgische Kolonialpolitik. Manchmal etwas versteckt. Anbei liegen auch einige koloniale Beilagen.
